Maritime walk
Of course, you don’t have to take to the water to discover our maritime world. Terneuzen has traditionally had a connection with the water. The story of the Flying Dutchman is perhaps our best known story, but there is so much more to tell. This is how we connect past, present and future.Of course, you don’t have to go on the water to discover our maritime world. Terneuzen has traditionally had a connection with the water. The story of the Flying Dutchman is perhaps our best-known story, but there is so much more to tell. At the Portaal van Vlaanderen you board our (solar) train. This brings you to the Scheldt boulevard. Here you see large container ships slowly gliding past you. They bring their impressive cargoes to and from Antwerp. Some ships fit as many as four soccer fields of containers! And that cargo goes way up, too. Are you already familiar with the ship spotting spot on the West Pier? The ocean giants passing the Westerschelde can be admired up close there! Hidden behind the dike is the old center of Terneuzen. Stroll at your leisure through the streets and listen to our guide who will take you into the maritime history of our ‘Scheldestad’.
